If we're able to sign Martin to a reasonable contract in terms of years and salary, it would make him all the more tradeable considering he would no longer have "rental" status. He's a great hockey player but with the cap situation I still think it's best to start to phase in some of the younger guys on D

Edit: Maybe even keep him this year for a cup run, resign him, and trade him in the offseason.

You don't sign him to trade him, you sign him to keep him.

I'd like to see more of Ehroff before I make my mind up on Martin. While he is very good, i feel the Pens already have 3 Dmen with his style already wtih Letang, Ehroff and Martin. I would like the Pens to have a more Kromwall style player. Not sure if Despress fits the bill or not, but a more physical Dman would be nice.

Do you think the reports of the cap staying put *should* make the free agent market be a better valued one?

Also, they started talking, maybe, as long as it isn't a distraction. I think they want to quiet the trade talk more than work on an extension.

With the price of crude dropping the way it is, the Canadian is not as strong. This will affect how the cap is next season. From the reports, it could be a smaller increase over what last years was.

Jonathan Bombulie tweeted a little while ago that Beau Bennett left WBS in the middle of practice. Hopefully getting a ride to NY as we speak.

Official call up probably won't happen until 3PM.

Yes, I know that. I am asking if there is anything in the past that would show that a minimal cap raise would cause the free agent market on average to have a lesser dollar value? I highy doubt it does, teams will still spend stupidly.

Not so surprising timing on the Martin change of heart... This paragraph jumped out at me in the New York Times piece on the Pens the other day:

But Rutherford and Johnston have also added more flexibility to the Penguins’ game.

“This year it’s more puck possession; last year it was more get the puck up the boards as quick as possible and get in on the forecheck,” defenseman Paul Martin said. “It’s a little more fun for us on the back end. Before you had to do it this way; it’s the only way. Now we have more freedom to make our own reads and make the right play.”

The story this summer was that Martin was close to Bylsma/Reirdon and wasn't happy with the change. Funny what a little bit of time and winning will do. Interesting that he basically took a shot at the old system too.

I'd only want one of Martin and Ehrhoff extended with all the D prospects & favor Ehrhoff due to his age. Still, with Martin and Ehrhoff willing to talk the Pens have a little leverage to get a better deal. Good news for that if nothing elae.

I called this with my seat mates the other night, being that we are going 1.5 hours from NYC I could see him getting a call up for the Rags. Hopefully this will happen and be followed by a reassignment for Sill to make room for the move.

No interest in resigning him, unless Ehrhoff intends to pursue free agency which doesn't sound likely. Either trade him before x-mas or play out the season and trade his rights for a pick. Too much talent dwelling in WBS.

That said, I think JR signs him.

I love Paul Martin, and would love to have him back.... But... Him and his agent have to know that on the open market, he'll at least get Brooks Orpik money ($5.5 mil x 5 yrs). There is no way I'd want to do that. Short term, I'd have to think about it, but even then, only if Scuderi's cap hit is gone (huge 'if').

I'm sorry but Martin is expendable right now with depth of D. If they can trade martin for picks or in a cage for top 6 winger than do it.

We can't keep the kids locked up in wbs...they need to be called up to play.

Maybe I'd he signs a 2 yr 3 mil contract with no nmc or ntc than ok. If not then trade him

bottom line, if Scuderi's cap hit is still on the books I don't see how we can sign Martin or Ehrhoff. You use the young talent to free up cap space, since the cap won't be going up.

my friend says Pittsburgh fans to go to Philly and boo Giroux. Is this true?

Thanks in advance!

If Skuds goes then Matin staying is not a problem IMO. However he should stay if and only if Skuds goes. We have too many cheap prospects that will help us with the cap for both to stay. It's one or the other, no wiggle room here.

As much as i like Martin as a player, if the rumor about the cap staying stagnate are true, you need to take advantage of having as many contributing players on entry level contracts as possible. Maatta will be due a big raise in the summer of 2016, and you don't want to handcuff yourself with all the big deals this team already has. Move on, let the kids play, and go from there.

Still believe Scuds will be moved by the deadline... The Pens have done a good job building his trade value back up... Pens really like Harrington and Poulliot... I think we ll see both before seasons end...it will be either erhoff or martin or neither.. alot depends on the kids.. and ALOT depends on the return potential for Martin via trade..
